Tax Fraud

Considering this day had started with me waking up in Elsewhere and then charging off to meet with the Taxman, ending up in a really nice restaurant after a day of trials and tribulations didn't seem like an awful thing. Of course, it would have been better if I had been able to actually enjoy my meal, instead of watching the table next to me for any sign that this date wasn't going as planned.

Agravane and I were sitting at one table, with Agravane taking notes as I said them, preparing for whatever the next stage of this plan would be. Personally, I was hoping that it would end sooner rather than later, whether that meant divorce or the exact opposite. Given that our deadline was Saturday, and we had already lost one day and were about to lose another dealing with the federal types, things were not moving fast enough. At a table directly across from the one where Dermot waited for Mathilde, Neja sat, wearing a black cocktail dress which showed off her legs, and not seeming at all bothered by the fact that her grey skin didn't at all blend in. My experience was that people would ignore unusual things until it was impossible to do so, but I also had a feeling that Neja was wearing a glamour or guise of some sort. Despite all their power and prowess, the supernatural magical community didn’t much like gathering the attention of the more numerous and highly volatile humans.

Humans were many beings’ prey, but they were the prey that fought back. And fought back well.

Dermot sat at at the table between us, dressed in a dinner jacket and bowtie. He was perhaps a little overdressed considering that this restaurant and catered to the trendy and dinner jackets were not trendy, but the supremely wealthy didn't tend to care about whether or not they were over or under dressed. Dermot looked a little uncomfortable, his hand reaching up every few seconds to tug at the bowtie—which at my insistence was a real bowtie instead of the clip-on one that Agravane tried to provide. It was three minutes past eight and Mathilde had yet to appear.

"Look, Cal, can we at least order food?" Agravane asked, looking at his menu one more time. I had glanced at it and found Spanish and Portuguese food of excellent quality, and no prices. This was not encouraging. Considering that I was paying for Dermot, Neja, and my own table’s expenses, I sort of didn't want to know the price. Nor did I want to spend more than was really necessary. At this point, I was resigned to having to explain rather a lot to Death, and I hoped that he had a good sense of humour. Dermot couldn't get access to his funds, Neja was technically working for me, and well, Agravane and I did have to eat.

"Fine. Order food." I had barely given my acquiescence when Agravane waved over the waiter who had been patiently waiting for us to decide on our meal for the last fifteen minutes.
